How to Choose a Wedding Hair Stylist in Vancouver & the Fraser Valley

Choosing your wedding hair stylist is one of those decisions that's easy to leave until last — and then suddenly it's 8 months out and you're panicking. I don't want that for you! So let's talk through how to find the right person, what questions to ask, and why this choice matters more than most brides realize.

Start with the portfolio

Before anything else, look at their work. Not just one or two photos — really look. Do they have experience with your hair type? Have they created styles similar to what you're imagining? Are their photos from real weddings, not just editorial shoots?

A stylist might be incredible at sleek, modern updos but less experienced with natural curls or intricate braided styles. Make sure their portfolio matches the vibe you're going for.

Mobile vs. salon-based — which is right for you?

Many brides in the Fraser Valley and Greater Vancouver area work with mobile stylists — someone who comes to your hotel room, home, or venue. This is what I do, and for good reason: it reduces morning logistics enormously. No one has to drive anywhere while trying not to mess up their hair!

A mobile stylist also means your whole bridal party can get ready together, which makes for a much more relaxed and memorable morning.

Amanda says: I travel to weddings all across Vancouver, Burnaby, Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and as far as Penticton for destination weddings. If you're not sure if I cover your venue — just ask!

Questions to ask before you book

→  How many weddings do you take per weekend? (You want to be a priority, not a rushed appointment.)

→  Will you be the one doing my hair on the day, or could it be a different team member?

→  Do you offer a hair trial, and is it included in your packages?

→  What's your cancellation policy?

→  How far in advance do I need to book?

That last one is important. For summer and fall Saturdays in the Fraser Valley and Vancouver, I typically book out 8–12 months in advance. If you have a popular date, don't wait.

Personality matters more than you think

Your wedding morning is going to be full of emotion — excitement, nerves, maybe a few happy tears. You want someone beside you who feels like a friend, not just a vendor doing a job. When you have your initial conversation with a stylist, notice how they communicate. Do they listen? Do they ask about your vision?

From the very first email or DM, I try to treat every bride like one of my besties. Because honestly, by the time I'm pinning the last piece of your hair in place on your wedding morning, that's exactly what it feels like.

Book early, do a trial, trust your gut

The three rules I give every bride: book early (especially for peak season — May through October), do a hair trial, and trust your gut when you find the right person.

The right stylist will make you feel excited about your wedding morning, not anxious about it.
